Laser Etched Keypad with Polydome Array
This keypad is molded with translucent silicone material, screened with the required graphic colors, and spray painted with a silicone based black ink. The black ink is then removed by laser etching to reveal the graphics. This yields very attractive back lighted graphics without the flood lighting seen with back lit keypads with positive image or negative image silk screened graphics. The keypad is then sprayed with a protective coating to enhance the graphic life.
The tactile feel for this particular keypad is supplied by embossed polydomes. The conductive ink is applied to the underside of the PET material prior to forming the domes. In this fashion the conductive ink shorts the traces on a PCB or FPC circuit when the keys are activated. Air channels are provided by a spacer layer of double sided adhesive. This adhesive also provides the adherence to the circuit. Keypads are shipped with a protective paper liner which is removed during the assembly process.
